Thank you Mike!
Mandolin master Mike Marshall wowed
the audience as a guest artist with the New World Youth
Orchestra on Sunday, November 16th, 2008 at 3:00 PM at the
Hilbert Circle Theater playing his new Concerto for Mandolin.
Mike was also featured on a few solo numbers he performed on
both mandolin and mandocello, a much larger version of a
mandolin tuned the same as a cello. Mike said about the
mandocello "It's from back from when giant mandolins roamed the
earth"! I wish I could sound as good in my dreams as Mike
does in person. The NWYSO and their director, Susan
Kitterman did a wonderful job and it was apparent they were well
prepared for their musical endeavor with Mike. Mike is
truly a master of his instrument and one of the finest musicians
I have ever met. When I introduced by wife to Mike she
said she has been hearing me say his name for over 25 years and
it was a pleasure to finally meet him which gave Mike a laugh.
Having "Mandolindy", an ensemble of mandolin players from the
Mandolin Society of Central Indiana, playing before the show in
the lobby added a warm touch to the event.
The workshop was well attended and
very intimate. Mike even asked if anyone was having
problems with specific passages of songs and then made
individual suggestions to help them along. Mike is not
only a great player but also an educator, ready to help everyone
move their playing forward no matter what level they were at
currently.
I would like to publicly thank Mike
for sharing his talents here in Indianapolis and for spending
his time with us. I can't wait till he returns (maybe to
record his Concerto for Mandolin with the NWYSO?....wouldn't
that be an honor!). We can all dream and people like Mike
are proof and inspiration that with hard work and dedication
dreams can come true!
