Mandolin kids "tear it
up" in Santa Cruz!
This video was taken by John Baxter (of MandoZine) at David Grisman's first Mandolin
Symposium in Santa Cruz, CA in 2004. It was the Children's Master Class Concert
given by Rachel Masat, Bryce Milano, Dominick Leslie, Sarah Jarosz, Jacob Henry
Jolliff, Chris Thile, and Sam ('lil Dawg") Grisman on bass. This song was
written that week and performed on Friday night at the final concert which also
included the instructor group recitals as well as the a final song, "Shalom
Aleichem" performed with over 200 mandolinists under the direction of David
Grisman. A personal aside, just before that song began, John Paul Jones
(yes...of Led Zepplin) snuck in the back and grabbed a spot at my music stand
and I played next to him in the 3rd mandolin section for the final tune.
That was a treat! It's amazing what 6 kids (age 12 to 16)
can do after spending a week under the direction of Chris Thile (mandolinist of
Nickel Creek). Wow! The future of
the mandolin is here and it sounds great!
